Chapter Thirteen

Tomorrow’s November fifteenth, which means the winter parking ban is in effect until April fifteenth. No vehicles can be parked on the road between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am, and violators may be towed. Chief Bordeaux would like to add the following statement: “It’s not up to residents who watch the weather forecast and decide it’s not going to snow. It’s every night. Period. Come on, people. We do this every single year.”

A few days later Chelsea pulled into Ellen Sutton’s driveway and parked behind Molly’s car. Since it was her party, she probably wouldn’t be leaving any time soon.

After getting out of her car, she took a moment to appreciate the big Queen Anne home that was an inn before David and Ellen Sutton bought it. She’d always loved this property, and thought it was the prettiest house in town. The inn had often hosted weddings and events, so there was a large gazebo in the backyard that overlooked the river. And several years ago the family had done a beautiful job of converting the carriage house into Sutton’s Place Brewery & Tavern. Having enough land to put the parking for the taproom on the far side of the carriage house, so it was accessed by the other road and not Ellen’s driveway, had definitely helped.

She grabbed the gift bag off the passenger seat and Evie met her at the door. “Welcome! We’re just waiting for Irish and the boys to sneak out the back door with Leeza and then we’ll get started. Jack and Eli are dragging their feet because there’s a lot of food in the kitchen.”

Chelsea set her gift on the card table they’d set by the door and then greeted everybody. The Sutton women: Ellen, Gwen, Mallory, and Evie. Molly’s mother, Amanda, of course. Laura Thompson. It was the small group Molly considered family, and she was glad to have been invited. Sure, she’d been the maid of honor, but she’d also been at the wedding. They could have left her off the viewing list.

“Go make yourself a plate,” Ellen told her, waving toward the kitchen. “And leave room for seconds and thirds because we made too much food, as always.”

She wasn’t kidding. Jack and Eli, whom Irish must have finally gotten out of there, didn’t need to worry. They’d be eating leftovers for days. Which reminded her, she wanted to make sure John remembered she wouldn’t be home for dinner tonight. After setting her plate down, she pulled out her phone to text him.

Not sure if you remember I won’t be home for supper tonight because I’m at Ellen’s for Molly’s party.

I probably would have remembered when I sat at the kitchen table and there was no food on my plate.

There was a slight pause and then another message followed.

Kidding. I remembered, and I can forage for myself. Although, I’ve heard tales of the food at Sutton gatherings and you might be able to sneak some out for me.
